With Brazil hosting both the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, European telcos are wasting no time in implementing their own international strategies in the country. The competition for a share of the high-growth Latin American market is already well underway.
The reasons for European telcos’ samba fever are clear. The extent of market saturation and the effects of the global economic recession, increasing regulation and intensity of domestic competition have been outlined in a number of Pyramid Research’s recent Country Intelligence Reports and Forecasts, including:
With gray skies on the domestic front, you can’t blame the European players for being attracted to the carnival atmosphere in Latin America. Samba fever lived up to its hype last week as Portugal Telecom (PT) revealed how Vivo — the Brazilian mobile operator in which it no longer holds a stake following Telefónica’s €7.5bn offer — contributed more than half of PT’s €1.9bn reported Q2 revenue.
PT, not wishing to miss out on the party, quickly followed the sale of Vivo with a proposal to acquire 22% of Telemar Norte Leste SA, Brazil’s biggest fixed-line telephone company, although the festivities will certainly not stop there. Recent rumors suggest that Vodafone is looking into buying a stake in TIM Participacoes SA, the Brazilian unit of Telecom Italia SpA. The Italian incumbent, not wanting to be a wallflower, has reached an agreement to increase its stake in Telecom Argentina SA, which, if approved by the regulator, would leave the door open for a subsequent merger with its Brazilian unit.
Now that most of the guests have finally arrived, it looks like the party is about to get started.

Spain: Some Signs of Recovery in the Telecom Sector
Country Intelligence Report published April 2010
The 2009 global economic recession had a devastating effect on Spanish telecom demand, but as Spain recovers in 2010/2011, its communications market will also recover. We project that total market revenue will grow at a CAGR of 2.7% in the 2009-2014 period, representing a cumulative revenue opportunity of €181bn in the same period. The mobile data market will be particularly attractive both in terms of the volume of the revenue it will generate and revenue growth. The main drivers behind this wireless data explosion will be the uptake of data cards, as well as M2M services. This Country Intelligence Report analyzes Spain’s communications, media and technology industries, including key trends, regulatory pressures and the competitive landscape, making it an excellent complement to our Forecast products.
