Mapping Latin American Cloud Strategies

November 14, 2012

At a time when telcos need to optimize and reduce their capex, telcos in Latin America are looking for cost-effective ways to integrate proprietary and third-party cloud services (SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS) and leverage their existing SME data infrastructure in order to provide a comprehensive ICT service offering to their SME clients.

In my previous blog post, “Cloud Aggregation Platforms in LATAM,” I discussed how Latin American telcos are addressing the delivery and customer experience of cloud services for SMEs. But how will telcos optimize the performance of their existing network to provide these services?

Last week at Ethernet Expo 2012 New York, I learned that Carrier Ethernet technology provides all the scalability, performance, security and management features required to connect SMEs and their servers and data centers in the cloud. Whether Ethernet is over copper, DSL, fiber, SONET, DWDM or SDH, Carrier Ethernet can help telcos enable bandwidth scalability and SLAs in order to meet the cloud services requirements of a growing market.

Mark Durrett, marketing director of Overture Networks, was one of the companies exhibiting at Ethernet Expo. He believes that telcos will ultimately look for platforms that will allow them to rapidly define connectivity services tailored to the optimal performance requirements — including dynamic capacity, bandwidth scalability and performance metrics for cloud services.

We think that telcos will make significant improvements in 2013 to develop a compelling value proposition for the delivery, network optimization and customer experience of cloud services for the business segment. Based on these three business needs, what technological approaches will telcos follow over the next few years?

Pyramid Research has recently launched a market research program service via a multiclient study that aims to help cloud infrastructure vendors understand the strategies, priorities and roadmaps of Latin American telcos for 2013-2015. This program is ideal for cloud infrastructure vendors doing business development planning, sales and marketing programs. For more information about the multiclient study sponsorship options, see here.
