Cambridge, MA, January 24, 2007—Growing too much or too fast was cited as a key challenge by mobile operators in Latin America, according to Pyramid Research’s recent report, Managed Services in Latin America: What It Will Take For MNOs to Make the Jump.

While operator success depends largely on how much it can grow, its subscriber base in this region is characterized by voice-centric prepaid users generating sub-$10 ARPUs. The flipside is increasing competitive, operational, and financial pressures on operator business models.

“By our estimates, the region will add more than 150m mobile subscribers over the next five years, which translates to substantial operator investments in the networks to keep pace,” comments author Ozgur Aytar, Research Manager at Pyramid Research.

As such, the region’s leading operators have expressed increasing levels of interest in managed services, which promise to reduce pressures on CAPEX and OPEX.

“To be sure, these are early days for the acceptance of managed services in the region,” says Aytar. “Operators appear unconvinced that vendors are ready for the overall responsibility of the network and services. They recognize the different vendor speech, but find that their mindset is still too focused on selling equipment.”
