Cambridge, Massachusetts - April 1, 2010 - Despite relatively slow growth predicted for Slovakia's telecom market through 2014, network and handset vendors may see new business opportunities as 3G is expected to account for roughly 70 percent of all subscriptions by the end of the forecast period, according to the latest report from Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com).

Hit by the global economic crisis, the Slovakian telecom market contracted by 2.5 percent in 2009, generating €1.6 billion (US$2.3 billion). In terms of total telecom service revenue growth Slovakia is expected to show a low CAGR of 3.7 percent between 2009 and 2014, reaching over $2.7 billion in 2014, notes Stela Bokun, analyst at Pyramid Research and author of the report.

"The ongoing economic recovery, uptake of new services, such as 3G, and the influx of new access technologies will drive the growth of the Slovakian telecom market going forward," Bokun says. "Currently, 2.5G accounts for 66 percent of subscriptions; however, we forecast it to decrease to only 27 percent as 3G services are forecast to be used by almost 4.2 million subscribers, or 70 percent of the total mobile subscriber base by 2014,” she explains. "The opportunity is particularly great for 3G network vendors as well as 3G-enabled handset vendors. Also, Orange Slovakia has been particularly active in the area of 3G services provision, offering 3G-enabled handsets from €1 while Telefónica is in the process of rolling out a 3G network."
