Cambridge, Massachusetts - April 7, 2010 - The MVNO subscriber base in Africa and the Middle East will grow faster than that of any other region, almost quadrupling in size from by 2014 as the regulatory environment becomes more MVNO-friendly in parts that are reaching saturation, according to a new report from Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com), the telecom research arm of the Light Reading Communications Network (www.lightreading.com).
MVNOs in AME: New Rules Lead to More Niche Opportunities for Operators examines regulatory changes in the region that are enabling more mobile operators to explore the benefits of MVNO hosting and then identifies key countries in the region where MVNOs present a particularly attractive opportunity. The 16-page report focuses on markets where the "traditional" MVNO model is unlikely to become a good fit, and examines alternative strategies that operators in emerging markets can use to achieve some of the same goals served by MVNOs in the developed world. The report concludes by looking in depth at the impact of the new MVNOs in Oman, the impact of an alternative approach in Cameroon and a pseudo-MVNO in Senegal. Download an excerpt of this report. Regulatory changes, market near-saturation and the need for more segmentation in certain AME markets, such as Turkey and the Arabian Gulf, will drive MVNO subscription growth at a CAGR of 29% from 2010 to 2014, notes Dearbhla McHenry, analyst at Pyramid Research and author of the report. "As liberalization progresses and penetration peaks, there is a gradual movement toward the legalization and introduction of MVNOs in the region's wealthier markets, such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain," says McHenry. “Thanks to pressure from international organizations and evidence that competition does not spell vanishing profit margins, Gulf regulators have become more competition-friendly", she adds. "Doing deals with MVNOs could be a very smart move for mobile operators, and in particular offer an opportunity to use voice-focused, niche-oriented MVNOs to expand their market shares considerably within underserved ethnic groups."
"In AME's less-developed countries - including most of sub-Saharan Africa and the poorer Middle Eastern markets such as Yemen and Syria - we believe that mobile markets are not yet ready for MVNOs but that operators should seek alternative ways to achieve the market share gains, churn reduction and base expansion that MVNOs can offer in the West," McHenry explains.
