Cambridge, Massachusetts - June 7, 2010 - Rebounding from the economic recession, Romania will resume growth as one of the four largest telecommunications markets in Europe over the next five years fueled by growth in VoIP, mobile data, and fixed broadband according to a new report from Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com).

Romania: Telecom Services Face a Long Road to Recovery is a precise profile of the country’s telecommunications, media, and technology sectors based on proprietary data collected and analyzed by Pyramid. This 32-page report provides detailed competitive analysis of both the fixed and mobile sectors, tracks the market shares of technologies and services, and monitors the introduction and spread of new technologies.  Download an excerpt of this report here.

As economic recuperation slowly takes place, we expect Romania’s telecom market to grow to RON18.0 billion (US$6.3 billion) in the 2009-2014 period at a CAGR of 2.9 percent in local currency terms. We expect strong growth in fixed and mobile data revenue over the next five years so that fixed and mobile data will account for 30 percent of revenue by 2014, up from its current 18 percent, notes Sylwia Boguszewska, analyst at Pyramid Research and author of the report.  “The growth of broadband is underway, as the big three broadband providers (Romtelecom, RCS & RDS, and UPC) plan further network upgrades to support higher Internet speeds and thus more advanced VAS,” she says. “The mobile broadband uptake is on a rise, as well.  In fact, we expect mobile broadband users to grow at a CAGR of 33.9 percent by 2014.”

“As the mobile market is reaching saturation in terms of subscription numbers, operators are looking into new sources of revenue, such as M2M, that we forecast will grow from an estimated 51,000 SIMS at year-end 2009 to roughly 0.5 million at year-end 2014,” indicates Boguszewska.  Following Zapp’s acquisition of Cosmote, as well as Romtelecom’s take-over of smaller operators through its wholly-owned subsidiary Nextgen, Pyramid expects a fair amount of M&A to take place in the Romanian market as operators seek to complement their service portfolios with the missing pieces of the quadruple-play bundle.
