Cambridge, Massachusetts, November 17, 2011 – 3G and LTE networks are quickly displacing 2G in Latin America, with 3.5G and 4G to account for nearly half of all mobile devices sold in the region in 2016 according to Vinicius Caetano, Senior Analyst at Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com) who discussed trends in Latin America’s LTE market in a live webinar produced by TeleSemana (www.telesemana.com) this week.
During this live webinar for Latin American service providers, Caetano presented Pyramid’s predictions on how mobile revenues in Latin America will represent twice the amount of the revenues in the fixed communication market by 2015, and that in order to keep up with increasing data usage, networks in the region must adapt and evolve.
“Within 3-4 years of its first deployments in the region, 3G networks already account for 26 percent of the subscriptions in service in Latin America,” says Caetano. “In fact, 41 percent of all mobile phones sold in Latin America in 2011 will be based on the 3G technology.”
With the high speeds already provided by 3G, Pyramid Research expects that LTE will take a little longer to develop. “Even so, we expect LTE subscriptions to account for 6.9 percent of all mobile subscriptions in Latin America in 2016, which is 4 years after its first commercial deployments in 2012”, Caetano explains. “ In 2016, 3.5G and 4G devices will account for 47% of all mobile devices sold.”
