Cambridge, MA, March 26th, 2008 –The US will be the fastest growing developed nation in terms of mobile data revenue according to Pyramid Research’s latest report, Mobile Data Best Practices: Positioning and Revenue Analysis in Emerging and Developed Markets published today.

In the US, mobile data revenue grew a whopping 54% to reach $26bn in 2007. “3G networks have matured and multimedia devices are abundant.  Popular content, messaging bundles and flat-rate data usage plans have driven break-neck growth” says Dan Locke, Analyst at Pyramid and author of the report.

Over the next five years, Pyramid Research expects mobile data revenue in the US to grow at a CAGR of more than 20%, faster than any other developed nation in the world to reach almost $70bn in 2012.

“Mobile operators must strategize now for a future of data rather than voice as their core business.  Data as a percentage of service revenue will increase from 17% in 2007 to more than a third in 2012,” continues Locke.

Even though SMS revenue will continue to account for a larger share of total data revenue through 2012, its share will dramatically decline over time, as Americans increasingly surf the web on mobile devices and revenue from remote access and information services in particular grow. .
