In 2010, Iran’s telecom market generated $9.1bn in revenue. The majority of revenue was generated by the mobile sector, which has been growing substantially. The mobile segment generated more than 70% of the total revenue in 2010, up from just over half in 2006, thanks to the introduction of the second national licensee in 2006.

Still, data adoption in Iran remains substandard, through we are projecting strong growth on the data front. The reason for the limited adoption is the comparatively late introduction of data services. GPRS was introduced in Iran during 2007, first by Irancell, then by TCI. The 3G license in Iran was finally awarded in April 2010 to Tamin Telecom, and the operator is expected to launch by mid-year 2011.

We are also projecting strong growth in the fixed broadband front, spurred by the new WiMAX operators, which are significantly expanding their networks, and the relatively strong fixed-line coverage of the country. We are seeing the fixed-line sector beginning to transform, following the introduction of new fixed technologies (WiMAX) and the legalization of VoIP. However, the telecom sector is subject to particularly close scrutiny from the Iranian government, whose unpredictable rulings will continue to play a major role in the speed of the sector’s development.
