The Malaysian telecom market generated RM30.6bn ($9.5bn) in service revenue in 2010, a 5.4% increase in local currency terms over the 2009 level of RM29.0bn ($8.2bn). We expect the Malaysian telecom services market to expand at a CAGR of 4.2% in local currency terms between 2011 and 2016, reaching RM39.7bn ($14.5bn) in 2016. The telecom industry is supported by a government that is driving an increase of broadband connectivity in the country. Having surpassed 57% household broadband penetration at the end of Q1 2011, the MCMC now plans to reach the 75% penetration milestone by the end of 2015. MCMC has mainly funded fixed-line penetration increases, via the HSBB project or by granting WiMAX spectrum. However mobile broadband continues to grow in popularity and as the ecosystem around LTE matures, we expect to see LTE absorb more of the first-time mobile broadband subscribers. Mobile data and fixed broadband will therefore be the most important sources of growth in Malaysia over the forecast period, with CAGRs for the 2011-2016 period of 14.6% and 12.9%, respectively.
