Taiwan: Smartphones and Tablets Drive the Mobile Market

Download Excerpt

The Taiwan telecom market generated NT$353bn ($11.1bn) in 2010, a 1% increase over 2009 levels in local currency terms. Although the economy did recover in 2010, Taiwan’s telecom service providers benefitted little from this recovery, particularly in light of regulatory intervention mandating lower tariffs in the fixed and mobile sectors. Both the fixed voice and mobile voice markets experienced revenue declines as a result. Though we expect the mobile voice market to experience flat growth over the forecast period in local currency terms, we expect the fixed voice market to decline at a CAGR of 5.4% in local currency terms during the same 2011-2016 period. However, the total market will grow at a CAGR of 2.3% in local currency terms between 2011 and 2016, driven mostly from increased usage of data-related services in both the fixed and mobile spheres. On the fixed side we expect to see more first-time data users join the network and users migrate from xDSL to higher-priced FTTx plans to push up revenue. Rising adoption of mobile broadband services facilitated by WiMAX, HSPA and LTE networks (after 2014/2015) will contribute to a 15.9% mobile data revenue CAGR in the 2011-2016 period.
