In May 2008, the world's largest mobile operator in terms of revenue, Vodafone, forged a strategic alliance allowing it to introduce Vodafone-branded products and services in Chile. Under an agreement with second-placed Chilean operator, Entel PCS, Vodafone will introduce a range of push-email devices, branded handsets and HSDPA USB modems.
Richard Buchi, president of Entel, said of the deal, “This alliance with Vodafone will enable Entel PCS and our customers to become part of a global network, whilst still maintaining the advantages of being a local operator.” Pyramid Research believes that this alliance will improve Entel’s competitive position in the market while helping to grow 3G adoption from 2% of total subscribers at year-end 2007 to a 65% penetration in 2013, placing Chile in the leading position of 3G adoption in Latin America.
